The Colonels lady soccer team will play against Nicholls faculty and staff members Thursday at 5 p.m.
Admission for the game will be $1, and all the money will go to the Colonel soccer team. When asked about the game, some of the Colonel players gave some friendly trash talk.
“I think we’re going to win easily,” junior midfielder Sam Etherington said. “The staff isn’t any good. It could be double figures.”
Etherington added that she thinks she’ll score a couple of goals on the staff. Senior defender Allison Flynn is also confident that the Colonels will have no problem taking care of business Thursday.
“I think we’re going to pulverize them,” Flynn said. “I think we’ll come out with the w (win), and they won’t even score one (goal).”
The Colonels head coach Dylan Harrison and Colonel sports information director Charlie Gillingham didn’t want to give a response to the Colonels’ trash talk. Head of Mass Communications Department James Stewart said the faculty had some good players on the squad, but when asked about possibly winning the game Thursday he jokingly said “not in his wildest dreams.”
“I’m just looking to avoid abject humiliation,” Stewart said. Stewart also said that he had been practicing karate to work on his footwork.
While some of the Colonels are confident that the game will be easy Thursday, freshman midfielder Amanda Bennett thinks the Colonels shouldn’t overlook the staff.
“I think that they’ve been practicing, so we better not over-analyze it,” Bennett said.
Etherington thinks that the Colonels head coach Dylan Harrison will tell the staff all the secrets the team has but doesn’t think it’ll matter.
“I think Dylan will be telling them our weaknesses, but I don’t think they’ll be good enough to exploit them,” Etherington said.
All three players agree that if the Colonels beat the staff, their study hall hours should be lifted. They jokingly said that this game is revenge for all the bad grades they’ve received over the years.
Etherington called out Colonel Sports Information Director Charlie Gillingham, who will be playing goalie for the staff.
“I think Charlie is all mouth,” Etherington said. “I saw him practicing wearing baseball cleats. I hope he knows this is a soccer game and not a baseball game.”
Gillingham said he would let his talking be done on the field and didn’t give a comment.
