The Office of Career Services and the Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco Free Living are offering a new three-part workshop designed to prepare students in getting a job by giving advice on resumes and interviews, going so far as to offer mock interviews.Eighteen students are registered for the workshop, but Kristie Tauzin Goulas, director of Career Services, said students were invited to bring friends to later sections. Anyone wishing to attend should call the office of Career Services as space is limited.
The first section of the workshop, which was held on March 5, dealt with preparing a resume. Students who attended were given free flash drives loaded with sample resumes and information students can use to prepare resumes of their own.
The second section of the workshop will be held Thursday. Students are asked to bring in sample job descriptions they would like to apply for, so specific advice can be offered on how to prepare for job interviews. “Not everybody knows what’s asked in job interviews, so we’re trying to offer good advice,” Tauzin said.
The workshop will conclude on March 19, with mock interviews. Several students will be interviewed by local professionals working in career services and human relations to get first hand experience on how to conduct themselves during an interview. The other students will watch, and afterwards, the staff will offer their critiques on what the students did well and what they could improve upon.
Although not all students will have time to participate in a mock interview, Tauzin said everyone attending will be able to learn from the session. “Even if a biology student asks a question, a finance major could benefit just as well.”
Tauzin said the workshop is especially meant to assist students graduating this school year. “They’re not graduating into the best market right now, so we’re trying to prepare them in the best way possible,” Tauzin said. She hopes to make the workshop an annual event.
