The Jubilee Festival of the Arts and Humanities moves into its second week Monday. Research Week, an annual event featuring presentations of research findings by the faculty and students of Nicholls, runs throughout all of week two.
Monday, the research of the College of Arts and Sciences will be displayed from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. in 301 Gouaux Hall. Faculty presenters include Scott Beslin, Kimberly Sevin, Daniel Ramsey, Yusheng Dou, Robin White, John Doucet, Desley Plaisance, Scott Beslin and Quentin Fontenot.
Tuesday, the University library and University College will have presentations at noon in the Café Room in 211 Elkins Hall. Presenters will include Melissa Goldsmith and Susan Gilbert.
Also on Tuesday is the opening of the annual Faculty Invitational Art Exhibition, an art show featuring the works of Nicholls faculty and invited artists. The works will be on display from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday in the Ameen Art Gallery in 200 Talbot Hall until its closing on April 3, with a reception at 3 p.m.
Wednesday features research presentations by the College of Business Administration at noon in 208 Powell Hall. Presenters include John Lajaunie, Shari Lawrence, Bhavneet Walia, Chad Turner, Betty Kleen and Shane Sanders.
Thursday, the College of Allied Nursing and Allied Health will have presentations at 8:30 a.m. in Betsy Cheramie Ayo Hall. Presenters include Rebecca Arnette, Katie Finney, Michelle Dufrene, Denise Pellegrin, Amanda Eymard, Kellie P. Graffagnino and Charlene Smith.
Also on Thursday, poster displays describing the research efforts of Nicholls students will be featured in the lobby of Ellender Memorial Library from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Judging will take place at 3:30 p.m.
A Research Week reception on Thursday will take place in the Captain’s Room of the Bollinger Memorial Student Union at 6 p.m. Guest speakers will include Bob Tibault, a member of the FBI counter-intelligence squad in New Orleans, who will speak about foreign travel and Homeland Security policies, and Amanda Eymard of the Nicholls College of Nursing and Allied Health, whose project “Walk in My Shoes” is a program that assists caregivers dealing with geriatric patients.
Other Jubilee events for Thursday include the Bonnie Bourg Lecture Series Women’s History Month: “Women Taking the Lead to Save Our Planet.” The guest speaker will be Beth Galante, responsible for operations at Global Green’s New Orleans Research Center. She is active in post-Katrina rebuilding efforts, including homes and schools.
There will be poetry readings on Thursday by Louis Bourgeois, English professor at the University of Mississippi and editor of “Yalobusha Review,” and by Mark Yakich, associate professor of English at Loyola University and author of three books, the most recent being “The Importance of Peeling Potatoes in Ukraine.” The readings will begin at 6:30 p.m. in room 322 of Ellender Memorial Library.
Thursday will also feature a performance by storyteller Arianna Ross, who creates a “story tapestry” from her excursions into Egypt and Israel and from her experiences teaching art, dance, ethnography, music and photography.
Friday is Culinary Day, presented by the John Folse Culinary Institute. It will feature cooking demonstrations by Don Kasten with flambé cooking at 9 a.m., George Kaslow with Spanish cooking at 10 a.m. and associate dean Randy Cheramie with roasted chicken at 11 a.m. These will take place in the Century Room on the west side of John L. Guidry Stadium.
Also on Friday is French and Local Heritage Day, coordinated by Robin White, assistant professor of French at Nicholls. The event will feature Cajun rock band Mellowberry, a Cajun petting zoo and Tulane University linguist Nathalie Dajko. The day’s events will begin at noon in Le Bijou Theater in Bollinger Memorial Student Union.
Students are encouraged to bring their lunches as well as an “appetite for learning,” as said in the Jubilee brochure, to enjoy Research Week and the many other Jubilee events taking place next week.
