The Nicholls State Lady Colonels won two of a three-game series against the Central Arkansas Sugarbears this past weekend at Farris Field in Conway, Ark. Nicholls was up for most of the first game, scoring two runs in the first inning. Junior Lyndsay Mesh hit a double, bringing junior Audrey Wood and senior Danielle Clayton through home plate. In the fifth, Wood hit a single to left field increasing the Lady Colonels’ lead 3-1.
The Sugarbears managed to score three runs in the final inning, ending the game 4-3.
Junior Lacy Gros pitched six innings, giving up four runs and eight hits.
The following day the Lady Colonels defeated the Sugarbears in back-to-back games, 6-2 and 6-0.
The Lady Colonels scored early in the first inning when Mesh hit an RBI single, which sent senior Kodi Butler through home plate, putting them up 1-0.
In the third inning, Wood threw a wild pitch leading to a Sugarbear score. Wood recovered and contributed to five runs in the fifth giving the Lady Colonels a 6-1 lead.
In the second game, Wood struck out five batters and only gave up a total of two runs and five hits. Also key in the shutout victory was junior Lacy Gros, striking out eight batters and pitching a perfect game.
This past Tuesday, the Lady Colonels played two games, the first was a 5-1 loss but in the second they shut-out Texas State 2-0.
In the first game, Gros allowed five runs in seven innings while senior Danielle Clayton provided the only multi-hit performance, showing 2 for 3.
In the second game, the Colonels were able to take an early lead in the bottom of the first when Clayton brought Butler home from second. Wood allowed only three hits while Mesh and Clayton each went 1 for 2 with an RBI.
After their win over Texas State, the Lady Colonels then defeated Texas State once again, 2-1.
Mesh led the Colonels with a two RBI in the sixth inning, lifting them to a 2-1 lead and eventually to the win.
The Colonels travel to Houston Baptist this Saturday and their next conference game will be against the University of Texas at San Antonio April 4.
