At the April 13 meeting of the Student Government Association Senate, the senators voted on an insurance policy for the next academic school year.
After reviewing the various bids received from different insurance companies, the Senate decided to remain with the same insurance company as this past year, GM Southwest.
The old policy covered $300 of medical bills, but the new policy will have a $500 a year limit, along with STD testing for students and a prescription drug card. Students will not be required to go to NSU health services in order to use this insurance.
“We need students to understand that this insurance serves as a secondary insurance policy,” Natasha Busch, arts and science senator and public relations sophomore from Baton Rouge, said.
This policy is meant to serve as a secondary insurance coverage for students to be used in addition to other health insurance.
According to Busch, although the policy is going to cover more things, the cost will remain the same. It will cost full-time students $31.15 to cover themselves. If they would like to purchase additional insurance for family members, it will cost $47.80 for their spouse and an additional $34.70 for each child which will be covered in fees at the beginning of the academic year. This insurance may require a $20 co-pay for some people.
“Everyone pays the insurance fees up front,” Damian Breaux, SGA president, said. “It is included in your fees at the beginning of the semester.”
“We chose this company because they gave us everything we wanted without a fee increase,” he said.
The other companies that put in a bid did not compare to the prices GM Southwest offered. According to Busch, this helped the Senate make the decision regarding which policy to choose.
“As soon as the contracts are signed, we will pump out PR via The Nicholls Worth,” Breaux said.
