An eight-run fourth inning helped the Louisiana State University Lady Tigers overcome a 6-2 deficit on their way to a 10-6 victory over the Lady Colonels in action played April 13 at Lady Colonel Diamond.The fourth inning saw the Lady Tigers (23-15) plate eight runs on six hits along with one Lady Colonel error.
Designated hitter Lauren Castle and second baseman Vanessa Soto hit back-to-back doubles, plating three Lady Tiger runs to cut the Lady Colonel lead to 6-5. Two batters later, shortstop Lauren Delahoussaye drove home another run on an RBI single.
The Lady Tigers finished the inning with four more runs for the final 10-6.
“A lot has not gone right for this team (LSU),” Lady Tiger head softball coach Yvette Girouard said. “I saved some starters. I give a lot of credit to Nicholls. They made some spectacular plays.”
After relinquishing a single run in the top of the first inning, the Lady Colonels countered with four runs in their half of the inning.
Freshman right fielder Kat Harrell scored the Lady Colonel’s first run on a fielder’s choice. Back-to-back singles along with a fielder’s choice accounted for the three remaining Lady Colonel runs in the first.
The Lady Colonels added two more runs in the bottom of the second, to extend their lead to 6-1.
Freshman Megan Jolly (5-4) recorded the win for the Lady Tigers, while Wagner was tagged with the loss.
Leftfielder Leslie Klein led the Lady Tigers at the plate with a 3-4 performance, while junior centerfielder Andrea Ground went 3-3 at the plate for the Lady Colonels.
The Lady Colonels continued play this past weekend with a three game series against the Texas State Bobcats. The Bobcats took two out of three from the Lady Colonels, winning the first game 3-0 and the series finale 7-4. The Lady Colonels won game two 5-1.
In Sunday’s action, the Bobcats scored in every inning except the sixth on their way to a 7-4 victory over the Lady Colonels.
Texas State (23-23, 16-7 SLC) got on the board in the top of the first inning when pitcher Katie Ann Trahan laced an RBI double to left field and scored two batters later for a 2-0 Texas State advantage.
The Lady Colonels (14-30, 9-15) countered with a run in the bottom of the first to cut the lead to 2-1, but single runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings enabled the Bobcats to jump out to a commanding 6-1 lead.
Down by five runs, the Lady Colonels plated three runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth to get back in the ball game.
With one out, Yelverton drove home junior leftfielder Terri Clouatre on an RBI single. Ground also scored on the play to cut the Bobcat lead to 6-3. Another run crossed the plate for the Lady Colonels, but they would not get any closer in the inning.
“We started getting on her in the fifth and six inning,” Parsons said. “We capitalized on some mistakes. Lindsay Coleman hit the ball well today.”
Texas State would add one more run in the top of the seventh for the 7-4 final.
“What was big for us was seven innings of ball together,” Texas State head softball coach Ricci Woodard said. “We haven’t done it that often. Our goal was to come together and put together seven innings.”
Trahan (20-16) earned the win for the Bobcats, while Wagner (8-14) suffered the loss for the Lady Colonels.
Leftfielder Amy Krueger and catcher Rachael Bonetti led the Bobcats at the plate with two hits and two RBIs apiece. Coleman finished the day 3-4 with two RBIs to lead the Lady Colonels.
Game Two
Wagner made her presence known both on the mound and at the plate.
Not only did she pitch a complete game three-hitter, but she also hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth for the Lady Colonels on their way to a 5-1 win in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader.
Wagner recorded the win for the Lady Colonels while Trahan suffered the loss.
Game One
Behind a complete game shutout from Trahan, the Bobcats defeated the Lady Colonels 3-0 in the first game on Saturday.
Trahan recorded the win for the Bobcats while Barksdale (5-10) absorbed the loss for the Lady Colonels.
The Lady Colonels will return to action when they host McNeese State in another Southland Conference series beginning with a double header on Saturday and a single game on Sunday. Game times for the doubleheader are 1 and 3 p.m. while Sunday’s game will be at noon.
