“3D Radio Show,” written by Blake Petit, alumnus of Nicholls, is a slapstick comedy that centers on modern day actors who try to produce a classic radio variety show, but everything seems to go wrong.
This is the second play Petit has written but the first play ever to be performed on stage.
“Many different things inspire me to write,” Petit said. “I get ideas from things that happen to me, things I read and different places.”
Petit said he hopes the audience will have fun watching the show and get a sense of his goofy humor.
“Different audiences respond to different things; hopefully (they) will laugh and enjoy watching the show,” Petit said.
The play will be directed by Ronee’ Garcia Bourgeois, board member of the Thibodaux Playhouse, and will be performed at the Thibodaux Playhouse on January 29-31 and Feb 6-8.
Petit is a 2000 mass communication graduate of Nicholls. While at Nicholls, he was the lagniappe editor of The Nicholls Worth, a member of the marching band, concert band, choir and Nicholls Players. He also worked for KNSU for three semesters and was a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinofonia, the professional fraternity for men in music.
Angela Hammerli, associate professor of teacher education, said she could remember Petit involved in several of the Nicholls Players productions and knew him from a chorographical point of view.
Petit is currently the managing editor for the St. Charles Herald Guide and a board member for the Thibodaux Playhouse.
According to Hammerli, Joan Dubis Delatte and Todd M. Keller are also alumni of Nicholls who are now board members for the Thibodaux Playhouse.
Petit said tryouts for the play are Dec. 1 and 2 at 7 p.m. in the ex temple the Thibodaux Playhouse uses for rehearsals on 1120 Caroline St.
He is currently looking for five men, four women and a piano player who is capable of improvising music and may have some lines.
“I am not looking for any particular age group but for the right type of actors who can interact with the audience and improvise,” Petit said.
Hammerli said the play sounds like a fun production, but one can never know how successful a play will be until it all comes together.
“I am proud someone as young as Blake is doing something as monumental as a production in the Thibodaux Playhouse,” Hammerli said.
