The Lady Colonel softball team won its second conference series in consecutive weekends, taking the series finale against Stephen F. Austin in dramatic fashion with a 5-4 come-from-behind victory at Lady Colonel Diamond on Sunday.Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh with two outs and runners on second and third, sophomore shortstop Lindsey Yelverton popped up to Stephen F. Austin’s shortstop, Jessica Tullos, for what should have been the third out of the game and a victory for the Ladyjacks.
However, Tullos dropped the ball allowing junior leftfielder Terri Clouatre and freshman right fielder Kathryn Harrell to score the tying and winning runs respectively.
The win helped the Lady Colonels (13-24, 8-10 SLC) capture their second consecutive series victory. The Lady Colonels, who won the second game of a doubleheader with the Ladyjacks Saturday 5-2 after falling in game one 7-5, also won their road series last weekend with Southeastern Louisiana University.
“We hung well,” Parsons said. “We played from behind all day long and then something good just happened for us. They’ve been making spectacular catches all weekend long. In all three games they’ve [made] catch after catch. We’re hitting balls to the wall, and they’re making catches out there. Finally, we hit a little popup and she drops it.”
The Ladyjacks had a golden opportunity to push across a run with centerfielder Carrie Woydziak standing at third base and one out. However, senior Lady Colonel hurler Nichole Wagner forced a pop up and strike out to end the threat.
In the bottom half of the first, the Lady Colonels also had an opportunity to score with Harrell at third base and two outs, but junior first baseman Lindsay Coleman flied out to end the inning.
SFA (12-21, 4-14 SLC) got on the scoreboard in the top of the second when third baseman Ragen Rutherford scored from second base on a two-base error. Later in the inning, Tullos drove home a run on a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Two batters later, Sidney Rutherford scored on an RBI single to increase the SFA lead to 3-0.
The Lady Colonels retaliated in their half of the second inning. With the bases loaded, SFA head softball coach Jennifer Poulsen brought in freshman Kaitlin Morrison to replace junior Julie Morse on the mound. Harrell greeted Morrison with an RBI double to right field to clear the bases and knot the score at three.
The Lady Colonels had a chance to extend their lead in the bottom of the third when Yelverton doubled to leadoff the inning and advanced to third on a groundout, but SFA brought in junior Nicole Carter to pitch. Carter retired the next two batters to thwart off a Lady Colonel threat.
Poulsen said she switched pitchers to try to keep the Lady Colonels on their heels at the plate.
“I think the key to any pitcher or pitching staff being successful is being able to keep hitters off balanced, and I think we did a pretty good job of doing that,” Poulsen said.
SFA regained the lead in the top of the fifth when a run scored on an error by Yelverton gave SFA a 4-3 advantage. After giving up a double to put runners at second and third with one out, Wagner was replaced on the mound by freshman Jessica Barksdale. Barksdale retired the next two batters to end the inning and escape any more damage.
Barksdale recorded the win for the Lady Colonels pitching 2.2 innings to improve to 5-8 on the season. She allowed no runs on no hits with one walk and one strikeout.
Senior Traci More, who pitched the final third of an inning for SFA, suffered the loss, falling to 3-7 on the season. She allowed one hit and one run while striking out one.
Carter and Wagner were both factored in with no decisions for their respective teams. Carter pitched four innings for SFA, striking out five and surrendering one hit. Wagner surrendered seven hits and one earned run, walking three and striking out one in 4.1 innings of work.
Game Two
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Colonels scored four runs in their at-bat, propelling them past the Ladyjacks 5-2.
SFA got on the board in the top of the first inning when Hersey singled home Woydziak for a 1-0 Lumberjack lead.
The Lady Colonels countered with a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Coleman to tie the game at one.
The Ladyjacks regained the lead in the fourth on an RBI single by Tullos.
The score remained 2-1 in favor of the Ladyjacks until the Lady Colonels made their move in the bottom of the sixth.
Wagner (7-11) surrendered two runs on four hits while fanning six in seven innings. Moore (3-6) was saddled with the loss for SFA, giving up one run on three hits and striking out two in two innings pitched.
Game One
After giving up three runs to Lady Colonels in the bottom of the second inning, the Ladyjacks plated six of their own in the top of the third, jumping out to a 7-3 lead.
The Lady Colonels scored single runs in both the fourth and sixth innings but the lead was too much to overcome as they fell to the Ladyjacks 7-5.
Moore picked up the win for the Ladyjacks while Barksdale was saddled with the loss for the Lady Colonels.
Yelverton and Hersey each hit solo home runs for their respective teams.
The Lady Colonels return to action when they hit the road on Saturday to face Texas-San Antonio in a conference doubleheader with game times scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. respectively. The Roadrunners and Lady Colonels will conclude the series with a single game on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
