Former Colonel running back Colt Colletti is “playing the waiting game” after not being invited back to the New Orleans Saints Training Camp.Colletti attended the Rookie Mini Camp on May 5-8, which was a tryout. Besides Colletti, no one else invited was brought back according to Colletti’s agent, Mark Bloom, of Fusion Sports in New Orleans.
Although he was not invited back, he said the training camp was a good experience for him.
In high school at John Curtis Christian School and in college, Colletti played in an offense that ran the ball, but at the rookie camp he had to adjust to a passing offense.
He said the pace is quicker than a college football practice.
“(There is) no resting between periods at practice,” he said. “You’re flying through everything. There’s no teaching. You learn as you go.”
Colletti said he was surprised that he was not invited back by the Saints.
“Obviously they have to cut down to a 53-man roster,” Colletti said. “They had 30 rookies there (at the rookie training camp). You look at the numbers, and it’s a big numbers game. It’s not what we expected.”
“Rick Thompson (head scout for the Saints) said some good things about him and said he looked the best of any guy out there and he did,” Bloom said.
Colletti said the Saints have to cut the number of players on their roster down to 53 by September.
There’s still a chance Colletti could find himself in the Saints training camp.
“He (Bloom) told me the Saints could call me back by training camp. (He told me) just stay in shape. You never know. You might get a call here or there.”
Colletti says he is not considering the Arena Football League or NFL Europe.
“I thought about it,” Colletti said. “My agent mentioned it to me. NFL Europe is empty. They played in the (NFL) offseason. The arena football league is a passing league, and they only run the ball on the goal line. My game is to run the ball.”
If picked up by another team Colletti said the experience of playing at the rookie camp will help him because it’s a chance to play against the best competition.
Along with working out to stay in shape, Colletti is also finishing up his degree in general studies.
If his NFL career does not pan out, he says he will go to work, but he is unsure of what field.
