Students needing more than one remedial course will have to enroll in the Summer Bridge program. University College started the Summer Bridge program, which is a six-week program that will allow students to take remedial classes in English and mathematics. The University of Louisiana System created a master plan that makes Nicholls a selective admission university starting in the fall. Nicholls is allowed to make exceptions in the admissions criteria for up to 15 percent of the entering class.
The new selective admissions policy has not affected enrollment. “Applications are holding steady,” James Irwin, coordinator of recruitment communication, said.
Students are, however, being turned away. “We refer them to the community college level,” Irwin said. Once they receive an associate degree or at least 12 non-developmental credit hours, students can reapply for admission to Nicholls.
The University will offer only three remedial courses-English 003, Math 002 and Math 003-beginning this summer. Students needing more than one of these remedial courses will either fall into the exception for the entering class or will be able to take the remedial courses during the summer.
“In the spirit of the master plan, Nicholls will give students who have the potential to attend the opportunity to take the remedial courses that they need during the summer through the Bridge program,” Durocher said.
The Summer Bridge program is separate from summer school; therefore, summer school will not be affected.
Any student who has completed the TOPS core in high school and will be placed in two or more developmental classes at Nicholls is eligible to enter the Summer Bridge program.
According to the Office of Admissions, students who enroll in the Summer Bridge program will have a head start on students who begin in the fall. Summer Bridge students will be more prepared for freshman-level courses. They will also become acquainted with faculty and staff and academic services, such as advising, tutoring and learning labs.
Students in the Summer Bridge program will be able to take a maximum of six credit hours and will receive savings on tuition. A three-hour Summer Bridge class costs $180 as compared to a regular three hour University course, which costs $470. Two classes cost $345 for the Summer Bridge program and $826 for two regular University courses.
Financial aid may be available for the program. Students interested in obtaining financial aid may contact the Financial Aid Office at (985) 448-4048. Housing is also available for Summer Bridge students. Interested students may contact the Office of Housing Operations at (985) 448-4479.
To enroll in the Summer Bridge program, students must complete and submit an application for admission to Nicholls. Students must make sure that their ACT scores indicate developmental placement and complete a form and return it to the Nicholls Office of Admissions. The deadline to apply for the Summer Bridge program is June 15.
