The Lady Colonel basketball team’s time in post season play proved to be short as seventh seeded Nicholls was eliminated from the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament 85-66 by the No. 2 seed Louisiana-Monroe Tuesday night in Monroe. The Lady Colonels finished the year at 9-19 overall and 7-14 in the SLC.
Nicholls trailed 44-31 at the half and got behind by as much as 24 points in the second half. The Lady Colonels were only able to get the UL-Monroe lead down to 12 before suffering the 19-point loss.
In her last game in a Lady Colonel uniform, senior Katie Schreiter scored a team-high 20 points and played in all 40 minutes of her seventh straight game.
Dana Kelley, also a senior, had 14 points, while Anika Holmes scored 12 points. Holmes scored in double figures in the last four games.
In the first four minutes of the game Nicholls played the Lady Indians to a tie, before being outscored 16-9 over a span of seven minutes.
“I am proud of the way we played,” Lady Colonel head coach Louise “Do” Bonin said.
“It’s always tough when the season ends, but it will be especially tough this year losing Katie (Schreiter) and Dana (Kelley). We were picked 11th (in the SLC) and really came on towards the end of the year. We believed in ourselves and nobody on our team has any reason to hang her head.”
Nicholls was outshot 53.6 percent to 35.3 percent from the floor and was out rebounded 49-31, but committed eight less turnover than the Lady Indians.
Southwest Texas 69 Nicholls 66
Nicholls dropped its regular season finale 69-66 to SLC foe Southwest Texas Saturday in San Marcos, Texas.
The Lady Colonels trailed by two at the half, but got down by as many as 14 in the second period.
Nicholls got back into the game and tied it at 66-66 on a 3-pointer by Schreiter with 15 seconds to go.
Lady Bobcat Kendall Arant then drove the length of the floor, was fouled and scored. She then sunk the free throw to ensure the Lady Bobcat win.
Schreiter led Nicholls with 23 points as she also notched 10 rebounds. Heidi Broussard added 13 points and Holmes chipped in with 10.
Nicholls 69 Texas-San Antonio 63
The Lady Colonels clinched a berth in the SLC tournament with a 69-63 conference win over UTSA March 1 in San Antonio.
Four Lady Colonels finished in double-figures as Schreiter had 18, Heidi Broussard and Kelley tallied 13, and Holmes pitched in with 12.
In the game, Nicholls was out rebounded 45-33 and committed 18 turnovers, but shot a season-high 51.1 percent from the floor, 80 percent from the free-throw line and 58.3 from the 3-point range.
Down 15-13 with 11:30 to go in the first half, Nicholls went on a 16-3 run on its way to a 34-23 half-time lead.
In the second half, Nicholls started the period on a 12-4 run to take a 17-point lead. The Lady Colonels held a double-digit lead most of the second half before UTSA went on a 14-4 run to cut the Nicholls lead to four.
Nicholls was then able to seal the win by hitting 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to take its sixth win in the last seven tries over UTSA.
SLU 93 Nicholls 84
On Feb. 24, the Lady Colonels fell to SLC opponent Southeastern Louisiana 93-84 in Hammond.
After the first half, the Lady Lions headed into the lockeroom holding a 37-35 advantage and pulled away in the second period by outscoring the Lady Colonels 56-49.
For Nicholls, Kelley led the way with 21 points on 8-of-10 from the floor, while Schreiter added 19 points and 10 rebounds. Holmes chipped in with 15 for the Lady Colonels, while Mandy Broussard finished with 12.
