Sophomore guard KK Babin and senior guard Sumar Leslie made school history after both being named All-Southland this season.
Leslie believes that earning All-Southland is a blessing, but will never limit herself from improving.
“It’s not a big deal. I feel like you can always do more, and you can always do better; so I will never limit myself and I will never settle for less,” Leslie said. “However, it was true a blessing to be named to the All-Southland list.”
Along with Babin and Leslie, junior forward Alisha Allen was also recognized by the conference by earning honorable mention All-Southland.
As a freshman, Babin was named Southland Conference and Louisiana Sports Writers Association Freshman of the Year as well as honorable mention All-Southland. Babin started every game this season, averaging 39.2 minutes per game. A native of Gonzalas, she finished the regular season ranked 14th in conference in scoring (12.8 ppg) and eighth in assists (3.2).
Behind the arc, Babin tied the program single-season record with 74 three-pointers. She averaged 2.6 three-pointers per game and is ranked fifth in the Southland in percentage at .352.
“It feels really good to be named All-Southland,” Babin said. “I like getting awards for myself, but I wish we could get a few more team awards to know that we’re on the map.”
After coming in as a transfer from the University of Louisiana-Monroe her sophomore year, Leslie was forced to sit on the sidelines until her junior season. As a junior, Leslie started 12 of 13 games before suffering a season-ending injury. It was not until her senior season that she was able to truly compete, and the Houma native was ranked fourth in scoring (16.0 ppg) and assists (4.2), ninth in field goal percentage, (.459) and ranked second in free throw percentage (.847).
Defensively, Leslie led the conference in steals, average 2.6 per game. She tied the programs single-game record this season with ten steals and almost recorded the first triple-double in Nicholls history.
A native of Garland, Texas, Allen was named honorable mention after finishing tenth in the conference in scoring (14.4), 14th in rebounding (6.6), and eighth in blocks (27) and free throw shooting (.767).
This season Allen became the tenth Colonel to score 1,000 career points. She also became the all-time leader in blocks for Nicholls, making 73 for her career.
