The Colonel baseball team fell to No. 25 Alabama 12-2 Wednesday night and left Tuscaloosa, Ala., with a two-game split. On Tuesday night, Nicholls picked up a 5-3 win over the Crimson Tide. With the series split the Colonels are 5-3 on the season.
Alabama 12 Nicholls 2
Nicholls starter Seth Schornick had a strong outing as he pitched six and 2/3 innings and gave up three earned runs. Schornick, struck out five and walked four, and was credited with the loss on Wednesday night.
Relief pitchers Eric Walker and Mike Prejean were responsible allowing eight runs in the eighth inning. Walker gave up five runs, while Prejean gave up three.
Nicholls 5 Alabama 3
The Colonels got all five of their runs in the top of the second inning to hold off Alabama 5-3 Tuesday night.
Singles from Jason Wilkerson, Monte Mitchell, Kevin Larpenter, Kyle Cook, Brad Dantonio, and Rondon Anderson led to the big inning. Cook, Anderson, and Mitchell each drove in a run with basehits.
Colonel pitcher Ben Thompson scattered seven hits over six innings, while allowing only two runs and getting the win.
Alex Velazquez pitched one and 2/3 of perfect ball and struck out two to record his third save.
Nicholls 10 Loyola 6
On Thursday night in the Colonels home opener, Nicholls outlasted Loyola University of New Orleans 10-6 .
“Offensively we got two-out hits and didn’t leave any runners on base,” Colonel head coach B.D. Parker said. “Anytime you can get more runs than hits, then you have an efficient offense.”
Nicholls had seven hits on the evening, with first baseman Bryan Daigle leading the team with three. Daigle hit a two-run homerun with one out in the fourth inning to give the Colonels a 5-1 lead.
Catcher Aaron McRae also managed to hit a two-run homerun
for the Colonels. Dantonio pitched in with two RBIs and Morrow drove in a run with a triple in the bottom of the sixth.
Despite surrendering five earned runs on nine hits, Zach Murray was credited with the win.
Murray walked four and struck out seven during six and 2/3 innings.
The Colonels will travel to their second straight series with a ranked opponent, as they head to Waco, Texas, to face No. 23 Baylor this weekend.
“Baylor is a quality Big XII team that hosted a (NCAA) Regional last year,” Parker said. “It’s always tougher playing on the road, especially against an established team like Baylor.”
