Nicholls’ head soccer and volleyball coaches announced the 2007 schedules for their teams, and both said they are looking forward to the new season. “I’m excited about the new season,” head soccer coach Cindy Piper said. “Our schedule has us playing against some top quality programs. With our mixture of retuning players and new recruits I look forward to being involved in these competitive matches.”
After an exhibition game at Mississippi State, the Colonels soccer team will open the season with three consecutive home games beginning with Troy University on Aug. 31, followed by Southern and Jackson State.
Prior to conference play the women will participate in two tournaments. The Colonels will travel to Boiling Springs, N.C. Sept. 7 to play in the Gardner Webb Tournament and will also be participating in the Southeastern Louisiana Tournament in Hammond Sept. 21-23.
The team will begin conference play when it hosts Texas-San Antonio Oct. 5 and Texas State Oct. 7. Nicholls will also host conference rivals Lamar and 2006 SLC Tournament Champion McNeese State Oct. 19-21.
The 2007 Southland Conference Tournament will be held on November 7-11.
Head volleyball coach Chris Laird also released his team’s schedule, which will include nine home matches in Stopher Gym.
“It’s a good mix of challenging matches and matches that will give us a chance to build confidence in preparation for our conference play,” Laird said. “We’re looking forward to playing some good teams from conferences that we haven’t played before.”
The team will begin the 2007 season at the War Eagle Invitational, hosted by Auburn University, Aug. 24-25. Tennessee State and Troy will also participate in the tournament.
“All three teams will provide a big challenge for us to start the season,” Laird said.
The Colonels will play in three additional tournaments at the University of New Orleans, the University of Memphis and Alabama State University.
The Colonels open up Southland Conference action against Lamar Sept. 21. The team will play five consecutive conference home matches before returning to the road.
