Greek recruitment has gone through some minor changes for fall 2007 but looks promising according to the Greek adviser.
“The interest is there. We just have to work it,” Greek adviser Tom Stephens said.
Rather than hold recruitment events before the start of the fall semester as the organizations had traditionally done, Stephens said, they are planning to hold the events after classes have already begun.
Stephens said he thinks having so many of Nicholls’ incoming students coming from so close to the University may have hurt recruitment, because those students were not around the week before and the week of orientation when recruitment was held.
“That’s where we were losing a lot by having it so early,” he said.
The National Panhellenic Council will hold recruitment Aug. 22-26 with Greek 101 kicking the week off on Aug. 22, Philanthropy night being held on Aug. 23 and Bid Day being moved to Aug. 26. Interfraternity Council will hold its rush week from Aug. 27-31, and the National Pan-Hellenic Council’s joint-interest meeting is scheduled for Aug. 29. After all the councils have had their recruitment, on Sept. 1 there will be a barbeque to welcome all the Greeks back from summer break.
Stephens said the incoming class of freshmen seem to be very interesting and recruitment looks good so far.
“The freshmen class is that typical Greek class. The phone calls and the E-mails so far have been above and beyond what the records say is usual for here,” Stephens said. “Things look really good and it just takes that personal communication to build that interest up. We just have to make that personal connection.”
He said sometimes the fraternities and sororities get so caught up in the big show of recruitment they start to think that is the most important part of it.
“The show is not. The individuals are, and the personalities are,” Stephens said. “Men and women aren’t joining a skit. They are joining a family.
