A doubles win by the tandem of Virginie Villani and Rachel Wade proved to be the lone victory by the Lady Colonel tennis team in a 7-0 home loss to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Tuesday. Although Nicholls picked up a win in one of three doubles matches, for a team to recieve a point, two of three doubles matches must be won.
Villani and Wade beat Robin Singh and Amanda Cowieson 9-8 (5) in the No. 2 doubles match.
In other doubles action, Arina Uratani and Vinka Rampen of UL-Lafayette beat Catherine Gauthier and Sandra Gloria 8-1. At No. 3 doubles the Lady Cajuns won by default.
In singles play, UL-Lafayette swept the competition.
At No. 1 singles, Uratani beat Gauthier 6-0, 6-3 and Villani fell to Rampen 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2.
The No. 3 singles match saw Amandins Hubert win 6-2, 6-2 over Gloria.
Wade fell to Singh 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 4 spot, while Lady Colonel Lindsey Reecht, who is a soccer player at Nicholls and is helping out on the tennis court, dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision to Kristen McElligott in the No. 5 hole.
The Lady Colonels are currently playing with five players, so UL-Lafayette won by default in the No. 6 singles match.
The loss to UL-Lafayette dropped the Lady Colonel record to 1-1 on the season after starting the year with a 5-4 victory over the Mississippi University for Women on Feb. 3 in Columbus, Miss.
The win was head coach Robby Flink’s first as a college coach after taking over the Lady Colonel program in the fall. The match was played with each doubles match counting for a single point.
“That was a good win for us,” Flink said. “It is still early in the season, and we are just getting into the swing of the things. Mississippi University for Women is a fine Division II program and really provided us a stern test.”
In the No. 1 singles match, Gauthier beat Isabella Tellkamp 6-3, 6-2, while at No. 2, Villani ousted Ioulid Bolotoya 6-3, 6-2.
Gloria came from behind in the No. 3 singles spot to beat Samantha Sital 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Wade picked up a point with a 6-1, 6-2, victory over Audie Van Dyke in the No. 4 singles hole.
Reect fell to Kara Rogers 6-0, 6-0, in the No. 5 singles match. MUW won at the No. 6 spot by default.
In the No. 1 doubles contest Gauthier and Gloria lost to Tellkamp and Bolotova 8-5, while the at the No. 2 doubels spot Villani and Wade downed Sital and Rogers 8-4. MUW won the other doubles by default.
The Lady Colonels will return action to today when they face Lee College in Baytown, Texas. Lee college has the No. 1 ranked women’s junior college in the country.
On Friday, the Lady Colonels will play a pair of matches against the University of Texas-Pan American in Edinburg, Texas.
