The Lady Colonel indoor track team set three school records at the Jeff Davis Invitational at McNeese State University Saturday. The distance medley relay, the 4X400-meter relay and the 400-meter dash were the records that fell in Lake Charles.
The distance medley relay team placed fifth out of six teams, but managed to shave 15 seconds off the school record when they crossed the line at 10:54.56.
Lady Colonel runners Johanna Sjogren, Emma Sjogren, and Caroline Hulden joined Trina Peters on the record setting team.
Lady Colonel track coach Matt Pantusa was impressed by his team’s run, and looks for improvement from the relay team.
“The four of them ran a good race,” Pantusa said. “I hope we can fine tune the team a little bit, and maybe knock off another 15 seconds the next time we run.”
Johanna Sjogren, Emma Sjogren and Hulden were a part of the 4X400-meter race. Mercedes James was the fourth member of the squad, which was comprised totally of freshman.
Pantusa was pleased with the team’s time of 13:43.69 and liked the effort displayed by Johanna Sjogren.
“Johanna did a 3000-meter race an half an hour before the 4X400 relay,” Pantusa said. “She came out and said she was tired, but ran the race anyway. I respect her for that.”
On the individual level, Hulden became the Nicholls record holder in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:02.38.
“Caroline Hulden is a quality runner who can compete either in the 400 or 800-meter race,” Pantusa said. “She ran a technically sound race, and I look for her to maybe top the time this weekend in Baton Rouge.”
Shayann Crabtree placed 5th in the long jump after leaping 16 ft. 10 in.
“She (Crabtree) hasn’t jumped since Dec. 9, so the fact that she jumped well this past Saturday with such a long lay off is a very good sign of things to come for her.”
On the men’s side, Jamal James took his heat in the 100-meter dash and fourth overall with a time of 50.99.
“If he had been in the faster heat, he may have won it all,” Pantusa said.
Long jumper Andras Farkas, a freshman from Hungary, participated in his first track meet for Nicholls. Farkas jumped 21 ft. 8 in., which is 1 ft. 2 in. less than his personal best of 23 ft., placed 5th at the Jeff Davis meet.
“Farkas performed well during his first meet,” Pantusa said. “He would have done better if he were allowed to wear spiked shoes, but McNeese prohibited spikes on their indoor track.”
The track team’s next action will be at the Purple Tiger in Baton Rouge on Jan. 27.
