In the first Student Government Association meeting of the semester, Campus Recreation director Mike Matherne informed the Senate in detail of the progress of the proposed campus recreation facility and the formatting issues of KNSU were discussed. Before discussing the recreation center, Matherne thanked the Senate for the funds they allocated for the intramural teams to participate in state tournaments last fall.
He talked about the research for the project.
“We’ve been working on this project for a little over a year, doing a lot of assessment to see if our students would like a comprehensive recreation center built on our campus,” he said.
Matherne said the committee has heard input from students.
“We feel strongly that students, faculty and staff would like to have a facility on campus. Our next question is how big and to what expense,” Matherne said.
He said he wants some of the committee and some SGA senators to visit facilities around the state to get and record some ideas.
“Please take this job very seriously. It’s something I’ve been working on for about 18 months,” he said.
Matherne also spoke of the location.
“We would like to have it near residence halls,” he said.
The SGA and the Student Programming Association will host a joint Meet the SGA/SPA Day next Wednesday from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.
Duplantis also discussed the alleged differences between KNSU and the SGA.
“We had a meeting of the minds today between my staff and the KNSU staff and some discrepancies were smoothed over,” he said.
“We are not pushing for a format rechange. What we have decided to is, because students have approached us, several of us will sit on the committee as students to discuss reformatting. We’re not pushing for it. We’re not pushing against it.
“We’re discussing the idea like it was originally intentioned. We are not a dictatorship up here, telling people what to do. We never will be. We’re working for the students,” he said.
Two new senators were appointed.
James Irwin, social studies education sophomore from Morgan City, was appointed as senator-at-large. Azadeh Alavi, freshman from Paradis, was appointed as Life Sciences and Technology senator.
President Scott Duplantis announced the resignations of Freshman Division Senator Amanda Thibodeaux, freshman from Thibodaux, and Chef John Folse Culinary Institute Senator Daisy Hollier, culinary arts sophomore from Houma.
The qualifying dates for nominees for Mr. Mrs. Nicholls must be submitted by Feb. 23.
