Poking is the Facebook feature that has many college students and others in general questioning its purpose. But when one turns to Facebook’s FAQ in dire attempts to find out the purpose of poking, it is quickly realized that the creators of Facebook are just as unsure as the rest of the world.
“We have about as much of an idea as you do. We thought it would be fun to make a feature that has no specific purpose and see what happens from there. So mess around with it because you’re not getting an explanation from us,” reads Facebook’s FAQ on the topic of poking.
“I think it’s just a way to grab attention,” Rochel Laurent, freshman from Montegut, said.
Facebook is an online community for college students and alumni, which also provides them with information that can be used for communication on many different levels. It will even go as far as to list a student’s current dorm room or phone number.
“It’s kind of like… geeky flirting,” Melissa Anselmo, psychology junior from Thibodaux, said. about poking.
“Instead of getting into a big chat situation, it’s a quick way of saying ‘what’s up’,” Sam Schexnayder, business junior from Houma, said.
