After dropping a contest to No. 16 Tulane Tuesday night, Nicholls came back strong Wednesday against the University of New Orleans. When all was said and done the Colonels defeated UNO 11-6. Colonel coach B.D. Parker said he was pleased with the way his team responded after falling to Tulane 14-6 Tuesday night.
“I was really proud that after a very emotional loss last night and going down 4-0 tonight in the first that they had the poise and confidence to maintain their composure and fight back and win a ball game against a good team,” Parker said.
With the win the Colonels improved to 6-7 on the season, while UNO fell to 4-2.
One player who played a pivotal role for the Colonels was red-shirt freshman pitcher Mike Prejean.
Prejean received the win, as he allowed just one run in six innings while striking out five.
“We were down early and I just had to hold them where they were at so we could get the win,” Prejean said. “I pretty much had it tonight and I threw the ball pretty much where I wanted to throw it.”
UNO jumped out of the gates fast, scoring four runs in the top of the first to take a 4-0 lead.
Nicholls found a quick answer in the bottom half of the inning, as the Colonels scored three runs on a homerun by Jason Wilkerson. In the following inning, UNO scored a single run to make it a 5-3 ball game.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Nicholls struck back with a run to make the score 5-4. After UNO’s Rowland Skinner hit a homerun in the top of the fifth, Nicholls took its first lead in the bottom half, as they tallied four runs to take a 8-6 lead. In the inning, eight Colonels came to bat and recorded five singles. Wilkerson and Chuck Hickman drove in all four runs, as each player tallied two RBIs. The Colonels added three insurance runs in the sixth to make the final count 11-6.
Leading batters for the Colonels included Luke Muller, Wilkerson and Hickman. The trio combined to drive in 10 of the Colonels 11 runs. Wilkerson led the way, as he drove in five runs on two hits.
Tulane 14 Nicholls 6
Tulane placed seven runs on the scoreboard in the final two innings to post the come-from-behind victory Tuesday night at Ray E. Didier Field.
With the score standing at 6-4 in the Colonels favor, Tulane’s offense came to life in the final two frames.
During the two inning stretch, the Green Wave pounded out eight hits after only getting three hits in the first seven innings.
In relief, Alex Velazquez allowed five hits and four runs while striking out two Green Wave batters in the eighth.
After holding the Colonels hittless in the bottom half, the Green Wave padded their lead in the top of the ninth to make it a 14-6 final.
Trailing 2-0, Nicholls answered with a single run in the bottom of the first. The run came when Kyle Cook hit a lead-off homer to make it a 2-1 contest. Later on, Tulane expanded its lead to three runs when the Green Wave tallied two scores in the fourth to take a 4-1 advantage. In the bottom half, Nicholls responded by scoring two runs of its own to cut its deficit to one-run at 4-3. The two Colonel scores came on a Tulane throwing error, which allowed Wilkerson to score, while the second run came on a fielder’s choice, which allowed Byran Daigle to score.
Eventually, Nicholls took a 6-4 lead after scoring a pair of runs in the fifth and a single run in the sixth.
Eron Morrow took the loss for the Colonels, as he went 1 1/3 innings, giving up two hits and three runs in relief.
