In Katie Schreiter’s final home game, the senior notched a career-high 28 points in helping the Lady Colonels to a 73-66 Southland Conference win Saturday night. The win puts Nicholls, 8-16 overall and 6-11 in the SLC, in seventh place in the conference with three games to go in the regular season. The SLC’s top eight teams will compete in the league’s post season tournament.
“Sam Houston is neck and neck with us in the standings, and I think the seniors made a point of not wanting to have an embarrassing game,” Lady Colonel head coach Louise “Do” Bonin said. “We have three road games left, so we had to take care of them at home.”
The other Lady Colonel senior, Dana Kelley, had 14 points on the night.
Sam Houston State jumped out to an early 21-8 lead with 10:44 to go in the first half.
Schreiter then scored a pair of free throws and Heidi Broussard added a pair to cut the Lady Bearkat lead to 21-12.
At the 6:01 mark of the first half, Sam Houston State led 25-15. A free throw by Schreiter and a jumper by Kelley cut into the Bearkat lead making the score 25-18.
With Nicholls trailing 27-20, Kelley scored seven straight points to tie the game at 27-27 at the 2:56 mark of the first half.
Schreiter would score the final four Lady Colonel points including a jumper at the buzzer to give Nicholls a 31-29 halftime lead.
In the second half the Lady Colonels slowly began to pull away, but Sam Houston would answer. A jumper by Schreiter at the 8:10 mark gave Nicholls a 54-47 lead. At the 4:02 mark, the Bearkats cut the Nicholls lead to two at 58-56.
A 3-pointer by Schreiter moved the Nicholls lead to 61-56 with 3:41 to go in the game.
Schreiter would go on to connect on 12 free throws down the stretch to seal the win for the Lady Colonels. By going 16-of-16 from the free throw line in the game, Schreiter set a school and conference mark for made free throws in a game.
Nicholls 66 Lamar 63
Without the services of Kelley, who missed the game because of a death in her family, the Lady Colonels came together to beat Lamar Thursday in Stopher Gym.
The Lady Colonels led by two at halftime, but could never shake Lamar until Heidi Broussard knocked in a free throw to give the Lady Colonels the 66-63 lead.
On their final possession, the Lady Cardinals failed to get a shot off and the buzzer sounded with Nicholls on top.
Schreiter led Nicholls with 21 points, while Tiffany Nearing, Mandy Broussard and Heidi Broussard all finished in double-figures.
Nicholls will hit the road to wrap up the regular season worth a three-game SLC road trip.
