All of the entries for the mascot competition have been submitted and now, according to Damian Breaux, Student Government Association president, the University is awaiting the selection committee to determine the top entries.A total of 20 entries were submitted from students, faculty and staff, and Breaux said that he is aiming for 10 top entries.
“Depending on what the committee agrees on, it may be less or more than 10,” Breaux said.
Once the top entries have been determined, they will be reviewed and forwarded to Tom Bonvillain, director of academic computing, to put them on the ballot, according to Breaux. They will also be made available for viewing online on the mascot Web site.
“This way you can prepare yourself for the ballot,” Breaux said. “Be an educated voter.”
Students will be able to vote for their favorite mascot online on March 27-29, along with Mr. and Ms. Nicholls elections, according to Breaux.
“Once we get that top vote we’ll go to the administration, approve the final vote, and from there we’ll start printing and getting ready for promotion materials up until Crawfish Day when we will unveil the new mascot,” Breaux said.
The entries submitted included mascots such as an alligator, crawfish, shark and raccoon. Breaux said that he is satisfied with the entries.
“There’s a good bit of everything in there,” Breaux said. “There are a couple of repeats. I guess that’s the only downfall.”
According to Breaux, no entries were rejected.
“Some people had minor glitches, but other than that, everything fell into line,” Breaux said. “It’s running smoothly.”
A majority of the entries were turned in on the deadline day, according to Breaux, and Breaux said that he was worried.
“Only two or three had been turned in the day before the deadline,” Breaux said.
When the committee meets to review the 20 entries, it will decide whether there is enough quality and quantity, according to Breaux. The committee has the power to suspend the contest if it does not see that the entries have enough quality.
“I don’t see us doing that right now,” Breaux said.
