A possible capital outlet fee for students and the status of the improvements for the crosswalks in front of Babbington Hall were discussed at the Student Government Association Senate meeting on March 15 in the Bollinger Memorial Student Union. Steve Escobar, director of public relations, said that he would be placing surveys in the mailboxes of SGA Senate members to be handed out to students regarding a capital outlet fee. SGA President Damian Breaux said that the fee would be about $2 and would be used for improvements on campus, such as placing more benches in the Quad. Southeastern University has a similar fee in place, Breaux said.
“It’s a way of getting funds without having to fight for university money,” Breaux said.
If the surveys are positive, Breaux said, SGA will start “laying the groundwork” for approving a referendum.
Breaux reported that he and Mike Davis, Assistant Vice President for Administration, recently attended a Thibodaux City Council meeting that addressed SGA’s resolution for a safer crosswalk in front of Babbington Hall. Breaux said that several council members recommended the resolution. The installation of the entire project “might take a little while,” Breaux said, but for now the council would like to re-stripe the entire area in between the crosswalk zones and place a “school zone” sign in the middle of the street. Breaux said that he would keep everyone updated.
Caitlin Morris, freshman senator, introduced a discussion regarding a plan for increasing interest in SGA. SGA members were encouraged to introduce themselves to all of their classes, with the permission of their professor, and explain who they are and what their affiliation with SGA is.
Breaux reminded the Senate of the time left in the spring semester.
“We’re SGA, known for our constitutional amendments and fees,” Breaux said. “But we’re here to serve the students, and we have just six weeks left to do it.”
In other news, Olinda Ricard, vice president, reported that on April 5 there will be a workshop for SGA Senate members in place of a meeting.
