The Lafourche Parish Council amended the “saggy-pants” law at its meeting in Raceland Aug. 28. The new ordinance would prohibit “any person who, while in a public place or in view of the public, intentionally wears and displays his or her below-waist underwear intended to cover a person’s intimate parts, or displays the skin under which said below-waist underwear was intended to cover, shall be considered a lewd or indecent behavior and/or indecent exposure.”
This change eliminates the section of the original law pertaining to bra straps, and the ordinance only applies to below-waist undergarments. The council voted in favor of the change 5-3.
Council Member Lindel Toups also offered an amendment to strike the words “in dress not becoming to his or her sex.” This amendment would allow people to wear clothing designed for the opposite gender. The amendment passed 6-2.
Lafourche Parish resident Amber Davis addressed the council and said, “I don’t think ya’ll job should be dressing us.”
Toups, the author of the ordinance, responded to her complaint. “We done passed it already. If you’re showing your underwear, you’re gonna be ticketed,” he said.
