Students use computers to check e-mail, access Blackboard or just to check Facebook. Computers and the Internet have become a necessity in college life. Tom Bonvillain, director of academic computing, said laptops and wireless Internet are very popular on campus. He said the academic computing department is, “getting about 800 laptop logins a day.”
Students are able to use their computers anywhere on campus.
In the future, Bonvillain said all incoming students may be required to have a laptop. Laptop prices have gone down in the past few years, so Bonvillain said purchasing is less difficult.
Some professors allow students to use laptops in their classrooms. Glenn Antizzo, associate professor of history and social sciences, explained the problem one of his students had. “He could not keep up with my lecture by writing, so he asked me if he could use his laptop. He kept up just fine by using it,” Antizzo said.
Joshua Stockley, assistant professor of history and social sciences, said he could not imagine teaching his politics and film class without technology. He posts film clips on Blackboard for his students to view in their own time. He said he is an advocate of using technology because students have access to information, which helps them in their educational career.
Ashley Orgeron, government senior from Lockport, is a student in Stockley’s politics and film class and uses her laptop for school. “We need to get on daily to watch the movies, and I think that wireless Internet on campus is important to allow us to do that,” Orgeron said.
