Sixteen games into the season, the women’s basketball team already has as many wins as the previous two seasons combined, five. The Lady Colonels have 13 opportunities left to expand their win total, all of which are against remaining conference foes.Earlier in the season, the Colonels knocked off Louisiana-Monroe, 53-52, with an Alisha Allen floater in the lane with two seconds remaining. The game-winning shot capped a 7-0 run by Nicholls. The win put Nicholls at 2-0 for the first time since 2002.
Two weeks after the game-winner against Louisiana-Monroe, Nicholls State played host to Louisiana State University. Nicholls was finally able to book a home game with LSU, because Head Coach DoBee Plaisance’s daughter is a freshman forward for the Lady Tigers.
The Colonels fought hard, but fell short to LSU, 88-52.
The Colonels are three games into conference play. Last Saturday, the Colonels pulled within six late in the game against Sam Houston State University, but ended up falling short, 81-66.
Ricshanda Bickham led the team with 19 points, while shooting 4-7 from behind the arc.
The Colonels are second in Southland conference in 3-point Field Goals made, averaging 7.1 treys a game.
They are third in the conference in steals, with 185 on the season, averaging 11.6 a game.
According to Head Coach DoBee Plaisance, the most important facets of the game that need improvement are rebuilding and team defense.
“By making stops on defense, I think the outcomes of the games are going to be different,” Plaisance said. “It has nothing to do with our offense. We’ve scored enough points in our last three games to have won the games.”
On Saturday, the Colonels travel to the University of Central Arkansas, where they look to avenge two losses by the Bears last year. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
