The Colonel soccer team failed to end a three-game losing streak as they lost to Northwestern State University Demon Deacons 2-1 in Southland Conference play at Demon Soccer Complex in Natchitoches on Sunday.
The Colonels have not faired well on the road this season, dropping games in New Orleans, Monroe and Denton, Texas, this season.
The Colonels are at .500 this season when playing at home.
In the first half, the Colonels where unable to score a goal as the stingy Demon defense held tight.
The Colonels offense would not allow itself to be shut out as Roxanna Gonzales, the Colonels’ aggressive senior middle fielder/defender, put the Colonels on the scoreboard after 52 minutes of play.
The devilish Demons got on the scoreboard first when Stephanie Miller, the Demons’ senior middle fielder who earned second team All Southland Conference honors, capitalized on a corner kick and headed the ball past Colonel goalie Lindsay Bartlett.
With the score tied at one, the Demons’ senior defender Tara Powasnik chipped in the eventual game-winning goal in 77 minutes of play.
Junior Brittany Hung scored the goal off a deflected pass from the Demons’ freshman Natalie Waguespack.
In a quote taken from Northwestern State University Sports Information Desk, Demons’ head soccer coach Jimmy Mitchell said he was impressed with his team’s togetherness for the first time this season.
“For once we played passionately. We knew it would be a very physical game because they are the most physical team in the conference,” Mitchell said.
The win improved the Demons to 4-6 on the year and 2-1 in conference play. The loss drops the Colonels to 2-7 on the year and 0-2 in conference play.
The Colonels will try to show their physical play this week as they take on the Lumberjacks of Stephen F. Austin.
The Lumberjacks will bring to Thibodaux a shutout defense that has recorded its second shutout of the season Sunday with its 5-0 victory over Sam Houston State.
The Lumberjacks are now 7-2-1 overall and 3-0-0 in Southland Conference play.
The Colonels will try to put an end to their losing streak by battling the Lumberjacks tomorrow in Thibodaux at 4 p.m.
