Q. How was the Insight Theatre program started?
A. The program was started in the fall of 1987 and was brought to Nicholls by Don Mintz. The program only included high schools from Lafourche and Terrebonne Parish and people from the Nicholls community. In 1990 the council center moved the program to Nicholls where it became very popular. The program started to die out between 1998 and 1999 due to problems in finding a director. This will be the first time since 2000 that the program is active. The program is currently sponsored by the peer education program. Q. What is the program about?
A. The program is about students educating their peers about issues that both high school and college students face. Students put on original performances to portray real life issues such as racism, drugs, drinking or even roommate problems. The main point of the program is to be able to reach out to the audience and make a difference. This fall the Insight Theatre crew will mainly be practicing performances, but in the spring we will start a tour to all the high schools. Instead of going during the day, we would rather put on a workshop to get the students excited to come see the performances at night. This way if the performances are at night the parents and members of the community may also attend.
Q. Who is involved in the program?
A. We have just selected a total of 30 students — 26 of which were college students and four that were high school students. Insight theatre has a very diverse group of students — some who dance, some who sing — but all of our members have an interest in theatre and in helping their peers. We are a big group of people with different talents combined together to make a great show.
Q. How were the current members of Insight Theatre selected?
A. The selection was not all about acting ability, but we were looking for the people who would be dedicated into pursuing the same goal as Insight Theatre pursues. The people selected were not only actors and actresses but were also stage people, make up and sound.
Q. Name a celebrity you would like to see perform with insight theatre
A. Halle Berry because I have followed her acting career intensely. She is an inspirational actress. She also seems like a very nice woman.
Q. Why should students be involved in or come to the insight theatre performances?
A. We are a big theatre group, and students should look out for us opening for two nights at Nicholls in early November. We will bring things to campus that will be seasonal such as Family Day, Memorial Day and Black History month.
Q. What other organizations or activities are you involved in at Nicholls?
A. Nicholls is the easiest place to involved and make your home. When I first came here it took me no time to make connections. I am a resident hall assistant in Long Hall, the publicity director for the Resident Hall Association, a cheerleader and the director for Insight Theatre.
