Trick or Treat! Or not.Halloween is all about laughter, costumes, and of course, candy. For this brother and sister, though, it’s not all about those things this Halloween in Tim Schafer’s new game, “Costume Quest.” In this adventure, you control Reynold or Wren, a brother and sister in search of each other (depending on which on you choose in the beginning) on Halloween night.
Along with the character you choose to guide in this journey, you are also able to assemble a small group of trick-or-treaters to help you along the way. You might be asking yourself what kind of help you would need on Halloween night, other than to gather up huge loads of candy. The story is a little deeper than just trying to go door to door and grabbing candy from each house.
Brother and sister, Reynold and Wren are new to the Auburn Pines neighborhood and it’s all hallows eve. Their parents want them to go out and make new friends while they go rack up some candy. They begin to argue about who’s in charge of one another for trick-or-treating that night, and with their mom’s arm you are able to choose who will be running the show, thus starting your adventure. The Game begins with you going to a few houses and trying to get some candy, but the young twins are in for trouble.
The second door you knock holds a big goblin in charge of getting candy for his master. One of the siblings is dressed as a huge piece of candy corn though so of course the goblin is going to take them. It is your mission to get your sibling back so your parents don’t kill you.
As any great adventure game is played, Costume Quest has a fighting system. This fighting system is known as an Role Playing Game. This RPG features the normal tit-for-tat fighting in which you plan each of characters’ attacks to take down each opponent.
Although Halloween has come and gone, this game can surely be played all year around. I find that it is very fun and it is a clever concept to have for a game. It’s one of the first RPGs I have played where the characters don’t have ridiculous names and involve tedious leveling up just to fight a boss.
What makes Costume Quest so unique is that the costumes you choose for each character is actually a from that they take on in battle. A unicorn, robot, and a Sttatue of Liberty are just a few costumes that can be used in the game.
Another great feature are battle stamps. Battle stamps are powerups for each costume that can be collected and used in battle. One problem is that each stamp you collect has a certain powerup, only one can be used per character and there are only a select amount.
Costume Quest is available for Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC as a downloadable game. That’s about the only thing wrong with this Halloween adventure. Although it’s very cheap, (1200 Microsoft points or $15.00) the game doesn’t last long simply because it’s a download game and those aren’t made to be long lasting games.
While Costume Quest may get repeptitive sometimes, it’s still a fantastic idea for a game and it will keep any gamer occupied for a good while. I recommend it highly if you have a few bucks to spend or if you’re willing to be all illegal and download it from the internet.
Enjoy the game no matter how you get it, and most importantly, happy gaming.
