Senators discussed a resolution that would recommend the University re-establish the car pool co-op at the Oct. 19 meeting of the Student Government Association Senate held in the multi purpose room of the library. The resolution requested that the University promote the use of car-pooling to students by creating a car pool parking lot on a central campus location near the majority of academic buildings.
The motion met opposition by senators in its original form and was amended. Shane Prejean, SGA arts and sciences senator, suggested that the Senate work out the details of the co-op program before submitting the resolution to the University administration.
“The logistics should be worked out before a plan is sent to the University,” Prejean said.
Steve Escobar, SGA director of student rights and grievances, explained to the Senate that the passing of the resolution would not create a car pool co-op. It would only inform the administration that the SGA was interested in have one created.
“We are letting the University know what we want to do so they can look into it,” Escobar said. “Once it (resolution) is approved, they will take it seriously and get things done.”
At the end of the discussion, the Senate amended the resolution to only request that the administration support the creation of a car pool, leaving out the details of how it would be carried out which included the section that suggested the creation of a designated car pool parking lot.
During the meeting, the Senate also appointed Gregory Brumfield, government senior from New Orleans, as student Supreme Court justice. Brumfield resigned from the Senate to apply for the student Supreme Court position. A student Supreme Court justice cannot be an officer of the SGA or the Student Programming Association.
