The Lady Colonels soccer team fell today to Sam Houston State University 2-0 in its match in Thibodaux.The physical match was plagued by fouls for both teams; Nicholls would have 12 fouls to Sam Houston’s 10.
“We got back to playing physical soccer today,” head coach Cindy Piper said. “When you play with confidence and want to win, games can get like that.”
Sam Houston got their first goal in the 25th minute. Noelle Wiggins got the unassisted goal for the Lady Bearkats.
Not long after Wiggins, Kim Brown was the second to score for Sam Houston in the 34th minute of the first period. The assist came from Yoanna Garcia.
Brown’s goal capped an 18 shot period by Sam Houston. Nicholls would only have four shots in the first half.
The second half proved to be the defensive turning point of the game.
The Lady Colonels held Sam Houston to only eight shots in the period, but would only be able to get four shots themselves.
Brown led the Lady Bearkats with nine shots, three on goal, and one goal. After her was Wiggins with four shots, three on goal and one goal.
For the Lady Colonels, Heather Gamble led with three shots and three shots on goal. Next was Amy Authement with two shots, one on goal.
In the past two games Nicholls has only produced one goal to their opponent’s nine.
“We’ve got to score goals,” Piper said. “We have been putting ourselves in the position to score, but if you don’t score, you can’t win. Plain and simple”
Nicholls (2-7, 0-2) will stay home to face Stephen F. Austin, Oct. 9 at 1 p.m.
