Girls, here’s a movie for you, especially if you have sisters.Directed by Curtis Hanson, “In Her Shoes” is the story of two sisters who are also best friends. The only thing the two girls have in common is their shoe size.
The movie is based on Jennifer Weiner’s second novel, “In Her Shoes,” which was published in 2002.
Maggie, played by Cameron Diaz, is a party girl who barely graduated from high school, can’t hold a job and believes her biggest asset is her attractiveness to the opposite sex. Her state of unemployment leaves her homeless as she bounces between the sofas of her father and her sister. Being a very slow reader, she prizes make-up over books. She does, however, have a talent for picking out an outfit.
On the other hand, her older sister Rose, played by Toni Collette, is a Princeton-educated attorney at a top law firm in Philadelphia. With her nose always stuck in a romance novel, she struggles constantly with her weight and never feels comfortable in the clothes she wears. Her dating life is basically non-existent. The one thing in Rose’s life that never disappoints her is shoes, because they always fit, even though she hardly wears them.
When the two sisters part ways after a dispute over a guy, Maggie, while looking for cash in her father’s office, stumbles upon cards from a grandmother, Ella, played by Shirley MacLaine, whom they thought was dead. Through their reunion with their grandmother Ella, Maggie and Rose learn how to make peace with themselves and with each other.
If any of you girls have a sister, you know that it is much easier to get mad at her than it is to get mad at your friends. It is also easier to forgive your sister than it is to forgive your friends because she is your sister and will always be there for you.
“In Her Shoes” is a great movie for sisters to watch together. It will make you cry, make you laugh and may even bring back some memories of your own.
