SGA Meeting

Reporter The Student Government Association Senate voted on Nov. 15 in favor of adopting a Facebook/Myspace Resolution, which acts as a usage awareness guide for students who post on these and other networking websites.
Freshman Senator Lawrence Briggs said students should be aware of the consequences and repercussions of posting personal information about themselves and others.
The resolution states that employers could access postings via the Internet, which is a common practice among human resource departments, and information found on students’ profiles might hinder the chances of being hired.
The resolution also states that while students “have the freedom to post whatever they desire,” they must realize that they are responsible for what they have posted, and students may be charged with libel or defamation of character for posting false or cruel statements about someone. Students also “may be liable for invasion of privacy if they post photographs of someone without his or her consent,” the resolution states.
Briggs also included in the resolution that although information has been removed from profiles, if it has been cached, it may be accessible for years.
Briggs said the resolution has been posted on computers in all campus computer labs.
