Since joining the Colonels golf team, Marty Reed, accounting sophomore from Deridder, has proven to be a valuable asset and is helping the golf program reach new heights. In his first year of golfing for the Colonels, Reed led the team to placing 13th in the Pat Hicks Invitational in St. George, Utah and 6th in the Birmingham Southern Spring Shootout.
Individually, Reed placed 33rd overall with a 145 card in the Pat Hicks Invitational Tournament and finished 21st with a 228 score in the BSC Shootout.
The Southland Conference named Reed as SLC Men’s Golfer of the Week Feb. 14 after his solid debut in the Pat Hicks Invitational.
Q: When did you begin golfing?
A: “I began golfing with my father when I was little. I played golf in high school and always wanted to play for a university.”
Q: What made you come to Nicholls?
A: “I did not realize I was going to come to Nicholls until the very end of my senior year of high school. I contacted Coach James Schilling and he offered me a scholarship and then said he was excited to have me. I looked around at a few other schools but I chose Nicholls because they showed interest in me right off the bat.”
Q: What did you think about the competition at the Pat Hicks Invitational and the BSC Shootout?
A: “It was fun playing against big schools like Colorado State University and Oral Roberts University. We have never played against schools like that because they are all from the west and it was really good competition.”
Q: How did you feel when you were named as SLC Men’s Golfer of the Week after competing in the Pat Hicks tournament?
A: “It was very exciting to have that recognition. It gave me more motivation and helps me continue to work harder to improve my game.”
Q: What are your goals for this golf season?
A: “Our next tournament is the Carter Plantation Intercollegiate Tournament in Hammond. Southeastern hosts the tournament. There is going to be some really tough teams competing at the tournament that are probably the best we will face all year. We are really working hard to place well and that would be big step for us. We are trying to get better each week and build up our game for conference play because that is where wins count the most.”
Q: What do you think makes you a great golfer?
A: “My greatest strength is my mental game, and I am consistent. I do not let my emotions get the best of me when I am playing and that is the biggest thing. I do not get too excited nor too disappointed when I am playing; I try to stay even. “
Q: What is your best golf score?
A: “I once shot a 64 back home in Deridder.”
Q: If you could compare yourself to a professional golfer, who would it be?
A: “Fred Funk who is on the PGA Tour. He hits the ball really straight and he is a good putter.”
Q: How do you think the team will perform this season?
A: “I have a good feeling about this team. We have three seniors that are really good and we keep each other up to par. We have great leadership. I am not sure how we will place, but I have a great feeling about the tournaments coming up.”
Q: What are the strengths of the golf team at Nicholls?
A: “Our strength is balance. Anyone on the team can step up in any round and shoot the lowest. Any player can lead the team; so we are all equal. There are a few players on the team that are better golfers, but it is not by much. So at practice there is always competition when we are playing. We always have competition between players to drive us to perform better.
