The Lady Colonels softball team went 4-1 in a softball tournament Oct. 14-16 in Texas. The Spring Kline softball tournament is held in Spring, Texas and plays host to different Division I and junior college softball teams.
This year there was representation from conferences such as the Big XII, Conference USA, Southland and Sun Belt.
Nicholls’ wins came over Baylor, Southern Mississippi, Louisiana-Lafayette and Texarkana College, with the teams only loss coming from conference rival Texas State.
The team is no stranger to this tournament, and head coach Jenny Parsons is not surprised by her team’s play.
“Two years ago Phyllis Guedry, the old coach, got into it, and every year we’ve played well in it and went back.” Parsons said.
For the games Parsons started different people in her lineup to get various looks at her team.
“They basically split innings,” she said. “We don’t have really set starters right now. We’re really deep.”
During the tournament, Nicholls beat Baylor 10-3, Southern Miss 9-4, ULL 8-1 and Texarkana 10-1.
The Lady Colonels’ only blemish came from Texas State who beat them 7-0 in a shortened game due to player fatigue.
“I think we were all there to find out what our kids would do in game situations,” Parsons said.
Playing well at a tournament like this can raise any team’s confidence level, and Parsons looks at her depth as one of her team’s strongest assets.
“I think the biggest thing is that it shows our team that we have a lot of depth, and we hit the ball really well,” she said. “And it wasn’t just my returners hitting; sophomores who didn’t get a chance to play last year were hitting well also.”
Parsons also said that she thinks her team feels comfortable with anybody playing and looks at her entire team as contributors.
Now with the season approaching, Parsons has much to look forward to but also knows her team still has some work to do.
“I think we need to get better, but I thought that we were prepared well,” she said. “We’ve got some work to do, but we’re on the right track, and if they continue to do what they did this fall, we should have a competitive year.”
