The Student Government Association Senate at its Oct. 26 meeting in the Plantation Suite of the student union approved a referendum to increase the student-assessed fee for the Mosaic literary magazine by 30 cents. Currently, Mosaic receives 20 cents from each student per semester. The fee increase will give Mosaic a total of 50 cents per student for each semester.
Jackie Jackson, Mosaic adviser, and David Middleton, distinguished service professor, gave a presentation to the Senate supporting the increase.
Ron Sapia, SGA senator-at-large, said that the Senate should approve the referendum, so that the decision can be made directly by the students.
In other business, Steve Escobar, director of student rights and grievances, said that he suggested that the University install speed bumps on campus. This was in response to a complaint he received from a student. Escobar said that the University was already considering the measure, but is concerned about liability issues if a car is damaged going across a speed bump.
The Senate also appointed Marquita Christy to the position of senator-at-large.
David Vicknair, SGA business senator, and Chloe-Ann Shaw, SGA arts and sciences senator were not allowed to vote during the meeting, because they entered the meeting after the roll was called.
The next SGA meeting will be at 4:30 p.m. in the Plantation Suite of the Bollinger Memorial Student Union.
