Have you ever had a thing for someone older than you? How about younger than you? In “Prime,” directed by Ben Younger, a 37-year-old woman falls in love with her therapist’s 23-year-old son.Rafi, played by Uma Thurman, is a recently-divorced photo producer. Rafi finds herself falling for David, played by Bryan Greenberg, hottie from television’s “One Tree Hill,” a 23-year-old painter who lives with his grandparents.
Rafi confides in her therapist in order to get over her fears of intimacy and vividly describes her new relationship with a younger man.
Rafi’s therapist, Dr. Lisa Metzger, played by Meryl Streep, discovers that her patient’s young sex machine, unfortunately, is her son. Dr. Lisa is not only upset with the age of her son’s lover but also with the fact that Rafi is not Jewish.
In the beginning of their relationship, the couple fulfills each other’s needs and desires, encouraging each other not to be afraid to go after what they want in life.
Eventually the differences in age and background create trouble for the couple. They have little in common. Rafi is from a wealthy, broken family and spends time with her friends at their home in the Hamptons. David, being from a traditionally Jewish family, is a closet-painter who still lives with his grandparents.
“Prime” is a really good movie until the end, which never really happens. It is one of those movies that leaves you hanging, forcing you to use your imagination to decide what happens.
The combination of great music and strong actors makes the movie altogether not bad, and actually rather good. But if you don’t like to make up your own ending to a movie, you may not like the conclusion.
