After two complaints were made from a Student Government Association presidential candidate, University Police is investigating vandalism to multiple campaign signs placed on campus. The complaints were made by Ron Sapia, SGA presidential candidate and current SGA vice president. The initial police report filed March 15 by Lieutenant Michelle Harris, stated five of Sapia’s signs were missing from their locations. Harris’ report also stated she patrolled the campus to locate the missing signs and count the remaining signs.
The report also stated after patrolling, Harris’ saw there were some signs down due to the weather conditions the night before; however, there were a total of only 15 signs.
Sapia said he placed 20 wooden signs around campus.
The second report filed March 18 by Officer Scott Randell, stated Sapia went to University Police with the complaint that more signs were damaged.
Randell said he did not patrol the area because Sapia brought the broken posts to the station.
The report also said there are no witnesses or suspects known at this time.
Sapia said some of his signs were gone completely while all that was left of others were the wooden posts attached to the signs.
“The sign I placed by President Hulbert’s house was missing and the legs of the sign were obviously cracked,” Sapia said. “Also five signs were completely missing.”
Sapia’s campaign signs were not the only signs vandalized.
Olinda Ricard, SGA presidential candidate and current SGA president, said the sign she placed by Ellender Memorial Library had stakes attached to it and she noticed the stakes had been broken off and only the sign was left behind.
“I took the sign and placed it in the window of my van,” Ricard said.
Ricard did not file a complaint to University Police.
According to Randell the complaints are still under investigation.
