Drink and snack vending machines in White and Peltier halls were broken into March 17, and some of their contents were stolen. University Police Chief Craig Jaccuzzo said glass doors to both halls were broken into, one with a newspaper rack, and though the burglars did not empty the contents of the vending machines, they took chips, candy and drinks – specifically Mug root beer.
Though police have no suspects, Jaccuzzo said he believes more than one person is responsible, and they were probably juveniles.
“Typically, this is kids,” Jaccuzzo said. “It’s a crime of opportunity, and it’s something they want to try to get away with.”
That day there was a baseball game and a literary rally taking place on campus, Jaccuzzo said, and juveniles may have been on campus for these events.
He said the crime likely occurred between 7:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday.
Jaccuzzo said officers will do additional patrols and some follow up on the case.
“We are going to step up our contacts with individuals that look like they are visiting the campus,” he said. “We have a group of juveniles that visits our campus regularly that we may try to interview. In my experience, that’s normally who would be responsible for this stuff.”
Jaccuzzo said to solve this case police will have to use “old-fashioned police work.”
If found, the burglars would be charged with simple burglary.
“If they got away with this one, or they think they did, they’ll be back,” Jaccuzzo said.
