While watching many of the televised poker programs, the average viewer may get a little confused about the different poker game variations. While the ultimate goal of most poker games is to build the best hand, many of the games take different routes to get there.Texas Hold-Em
The most popular of the games, it is more a game of luck and the ability to bluff.
First, each player is dealt two cards face down. A round of betting occurs as players decide for the first time if they are in or out of the hand. Then five community cards follow, first three known as “the flop” followed by a round of betting.
The final two community cards, known as the turn and the river respectively, are turned over one at a time, each followed by a round of betting.
In the end, the best five-card combination wins the hand and the pot.
Omaha
All players are dealt four cards facedown. A round of betting occurs as players decide if they are in. Five community cards are then dealt with betting occurring after the flop, the turn and the river.
Those that remain in then reveal their cards, but the catch is that they can only build a hand with two of their down cards and three of the community cards. The best five-card hand wins the pot.
Seven Card Stud
Each player is dealt three cards. The first two are down and the third is up for everyone to see.
Players must then decide if they are in or out.
The next three cards are dealt face up, with more rounds of betting after each card.
The seventh and final card is dealt face down.
After one last round of betting, players still in reveal what they have. The best five-card hand wins the hand and the pot.
