Olinda Ricard, business management senior from Kileen, Texas, has been re-elected as the Student Government Association’s president.”I am very excited, the turn out was very good for elections and I am happy I can continue with the SGA,” Ricard said.
There was a total of 829 voters in the elections. Ricard had 404 votes, and her opponent Ron Sapia, government junior from Raceland, had 395 votes.
Sapia said he was not surprised by the close election.
“I think every vote counted and every little issue of the campus is important,” Sapia said.
Ricard said the elections were a sign students care and supported both candidates.
The SGA fee referendum that would cost students carrying 6 or less hours in the fall and spring and 3 or less hours in summer 50 cents per credit hour, failed.
The votes were 340 for the fee and 344 against the fee.
Ricard said the failed fee referendum was part of the SGA’s fault, and it would have allowed part time students to become active in the SGA.
Mr. and Ms. Nicholls, also on the ballot, will be announced at Crawfish Day April 26.
