Nicholls will host more than 100 students from colleges and universities participating in the X-treme Spring Break program April 9-13. The Nicholls Student Government Association received a service-learning grant to host the event and house the participants on campus. Volunteers will help build homes in Bayou Blue for the Bayou Area Habitat for Humanity.
The program was established last year by the University of Louisiana System to get students involved in rebuilding Louisiana after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and students from all colleges and universities in the UL System are invited to participate.
So far more than 110 students have registered to take part in the program, Judy Daniels, Dean of Student Life, said. She said they are expecting about 150 participants.
The $40 registration fee will provide the participants’ meals, some equipment and supplies, educational and recreational activities, a Habitat for Humanity T-shirt and transportation to and from the work site.
The SGA Senate has allocated funds to pay half of the registration cost for 18 participants to be chosen at random after the April 3 registration deadline. Participants chosen will be notified via E-mail.
Marquita Christy, senator-at-large and X-treme Spring Break committee chairperson, said Nicholls already has more students registered than both Southeastern Louisiana and McNeese Universities had last year.
Students can register online to participate and be entered for the $20 discount.
