Many eggs will be broken and dizzy students will hit the ground laughing (or crying) today. Believe it or not, today involves competition. Members of each sorority and fraternity will become each other’s teammates and will root each other on to victory as they engage in the intended goofiest segment of Greek week. Goofy games begin at noon and include a variety of games for participating Greeks. Tom Stephens, Greek life adviser, said the event is one of the “big parts of Greek week” and its main purpose is to add in fun at the end of the week.
“It’s a way for camaraderie,” Stephens said. “They can all be together and just do silly stuff.”
Allie Fitter, English sophomore from Bayou Vista and member of Theta Xi, said today’s goofy games are a great way for the Greek community to gain unity among each fraternity and sorority.
“I expect (the event) to be a good time to be had by all,” Fitter said. “I haven’t been in a three-legged race in years. I’m sure that goofy game will bring back some good memories.”
The games include egg toss, dizzy bat, 3-legged race, the people pass, tug-of-war and the traditional chariot race.
Earlier in the week, Greeks participated in a variety of indoor games, such as arm wrestling, and track and field events.
Chelsie Portier, business administration sophomore from Houma and member of Delta Zeta, said last year was “a blast.” She said the “goofy” event allows Greek members to participate in an enjoyable, more relaxed competition.
“Even though our mission is to win, it’s not a cut-throat competition,” Portier said. “Today will be a good day to kind of unwind from the seriousness before songfest.”
Greco Faria, multi-national business junior from Nicaragua and president of Tau Kappa Epsilon, said their goal is to have fun.
“Our goal is to win, so we’re going to be competitive, but it’s not going to get out of hand,” Faria said.
