Due to a mistake made by the Nicholls Records and Registration department, the recommendation for Donell Brown to be appointed as a Senator at large in the Student Government Association should never have even been brought up.Records and Registration made a mistake, according to Jaret Hubbell, SGA president, by first informing the SGA that Brown’s grades were up to the SGA constitution’s standards, yet later retracted that statement by saying Brown failed to meet the proper GPA requirements.
“They’ve apologized for the mistake,” Hubbell said. “We’ve apologized for the misunderstanding.”
Hubbell also said that accusations made by Brown about his denial for the position due to illiteracy issues are false.
“We’re not at liberty to discuss exactly what was said in those (executive session) meetings,” Hubbell said. “However, you can rest assure that no executive board, judicial board or senator made that statement (that he could not read or write).”
Hubbell said that Brown continues to serve on two SGA committees and that SGA members hope he continues to be an active member of the Nicholls campus.
Hubbell also said with concerns brought up in executive session, several senators volunteered to work with Brown to overcome concerns discussed in executive session. Brown, however, has not responded to the offers, according to Hubbell.
Though the SGA could not accept Brown now, Hubbell said that positions are still open to be filled.
“The SGA continues to accept anybody that wants to become involved on campus,” Hubbell said. “We need more individuals to run for office for next year and apply to fill a position for this year. We need them now.
