Spring elections will take place March 22-24, and the ballot will contain a full agenda. Elections for Mr. and Ms. Nicholls, Student Government Association Vice President and two proposed student-assessed fee increases will be up for student vote. The two proposed assessed fee increases are being brought on by the SGA and cheerleaders. The SGA is proposing a $2 increase to the entire student body to help the senate meet costs of existing university services and to possibly expand on other services. Cheerleaders are also asking for a $2 increase to help with costs of equipment, game traveling and provide stipends and scholarships for the team.
The only personnel vote on the upcoming ballot will be that of the SGA Vice Presidency. Michael Cobb, business administration senator, and Louis Gardner, director of student rights and grievances, will be facing off for the open position.
The SGA presidency position will not be on the ballot because Damian Breaux, judicial board member, was named president by default.
Both Cobb and Gardner have specific platforms that they feel will best benefit the overall student senate.
Cobb has a wide range of platforms for his candidacy ranging from his promise to run senate meetings in an efficient manner, help the president in all duties and continue to improve and work on existing student government procedures.
“Being a student government association senator for four years,” Cobb said, “it’s really helped me understand all the little intricacies and details of how not only our major governments work but also our state and local.”
Cobb said if elected he wants to continue to serve the student body with an open door policy.
Gardner plans to campaign on a single platform that he feels, if executed properly, will help fix and continue to mold the student senate.
Gardner wants to push for student involvement with other student organizations. Gardner feels that increasing student involvement will help not only the student senate but other organizations as well.
“I want students to get the most out of the student senate and government,” Gardner said.
He also said he wants to appoint competent and effective individuals to serve on committees to help procedures and processes work smoothly.
Students must obtain their pin numbers from their academic advisor, the SGA secretary or records and registration to vote in the March 22-24 election. Computers will be available in the union for voting, but students are allowed to cast their votes from any computer available to them on campus and off.
