As a part of Jubilee, the NSU International Film Club will be screening “La Dolce Vita” in the Le Bijou Theater on March 22 at 6 p.m.
“The Roman Scandals- bound to shock with its truth.” That was the tag line for Federico Fellini’s masterpiece “La Dolce Vita” upon its release in 1960. A tale of one man’s struggles with the pursuit of hedonistic pleasures and the compromises he must make, the film is an example of Fellini at the top of his game. Intensely visual, with beautiful women everywhere, it made a sex symbol of Anita Ekberg and a star of Marcello Mastroianni.
Fellini, considered to be the best Italian filmmaker ever, was a huge influence for American directors, especially independents like John Cassavettes and British lens man Peter Greenaway, who adapted Fellini’s flair for challenging imagery and capturing the internal struggles of man.
The NSU International Film Club will be sponsoring three other films during Jubilee. On March 29 there will be a double feature starting at 6 p.m. with a screening of “The Scoundrel’s Wife” followed at 8 p.m. by “Belizaire the Cajun.” This program will be repeated on March 31. In addition, there will be a showing of “Il Postino (The Postman)” on April 7 at 6 p.m. All features will be presented in the Le Bijou Theater in the Bollinger memorial Student Union. Admission is free to all students, faculty and members of the community.
Students are encouraged to become a member of the Film Club. For a membership fee of $5.00, students will be able to actively participate in the selection of films and events to be held on campus. The money accrued from membership fees will be used to bring directors and their films to campus for forums in the future. According to Anke Tonn, associate professor and head of Library loans, the Film Club is open to all students regardless of their country of origin. “We have students from all countries. Our film selections are not limited to foreign language films; we also bring in art films and other pieces of work that normally would not be seen in this area.”
