President-elect Adam Lefort will be sworn in on May 7 after the announcement was made naming him the new leader of the Student Government Association.
The business management sophomore from Thibodaux could barely describe how he felt when he found out that he won the election.
“I was extremely humbled that the students believed in me to be their voice,” Lefort said. “Having my supporters there with me really helped, and I feel like a big weight was lifted off my shoulders.”
Now that campaigning is over, Lefort is now interviewing applicants to complete his executive board, and he is visiting with department heads to see what needs to be done across the compass.
As of right now, Lefort’s goal is to get settled and to start a set schedule in order to start taking care of things as the new SGA president.
According to Lefort, he wants to perfect what SGA already does before he implements new things through the senate.
Lefort wants to start bringing back colonel pride and old traditions starting in the fall for football season.
He believes that there was more colonel pride before budget cuts started, and school spirit has steadily decreased since then.
“I really want to give students incentives for going to sports games to make them more exciting for everyone,” Lefort said. “I am going to be working closely with the homecoming committee, and I would really like to see the homecoming bonfire become a big event again.”
Lefort remembers going to the bonfire every year as a kid, and he still cherishes his memories of attending. The bonfire would be a starting point to bring back these old events that have died out over the years.
“I would also love to see Family Day become bigger and taken more seriously,” Lefort said. “It is one of the greatest recruitment tools that Nicholls has to offer.”
Lefort believes that memories of the bonfire and Family Day drove him to choose Nicholls when it was time for him to apply to college.
“I could not think of any better university to go to besides Nicholls, all because I was introduced to it at such an early age,” Lefort said.
“Through this election, senators were able to show students what SGA has to offer them when they were campaigning for their chosen candidate,” Lefort said. “I am hoping that students use this to their advantage during the upcoming semester.”
Brittany Chaisson, a psycology senior from Napoleanville and the director of Rights and Grievances, believes that Lefort will do a great job as SGA president.
“Lefort has the experience and drive to keep SGA moving in a positive direction,” Chaisson said. “I am ready to see what he is going to do to better SGA and hear the students’ voices.”
Lefort plans on working with the senate to ensure that every student’s voice is heard because, according to him, SGA would be nothing without the students.
“I am looking forward to working with the students and enhancing their Nicholls experience as SGA president,” Lefort said. “I will put the students first, and I cannot wait to see what the year has in store for Nicholls.”
