Junior point guard Katherine Plummer has been a standout player for the Lady Colonels basketball team since the beginning of the season. Plummer, a native of Brooklyn, New York, moved to Thibodaux in the fall semester of 2004 to begin playing for the Lady Colonels.
“A great thing about coming to a smaller campus is that it is easier for me to focus on my schoolwork,” Plummer said.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Plummer attended Sheepshead Bay High School where she guided the team to the Public School Athletic League Semifinals in 2001.
Head women’s basketball coach Mark Cook said players from the East Coast are heavily recruited because they tend to have a better understanding of the game.
“The caliber of player that we are receiving out of high schools on the East Coast has a higher basketball IQ because they have played more basketball,” Cook said.
As a freshmen, Plummer averaged 9.1 points and 2.8 assists per game. She was named to the All-Southland Conference and Louisiana Sports Writers Association honorable mention basketball teams.
In her sophmore year she started in all of Nicholls 27 games. Plummer led the team in assists (115) and steals (52). She averaged 10.1 points and 4.3 assists per game.
Plummer currently leads the team in assists averaging 4.2 per game. She had an unprecedented 16 assists in the game against Sam Houston State on Jan. 6 to tie a school record for most player assists in a game.
Cook said Plummer is a leader on the team and does an outstanding job at recognizing defenses of opposing teams.
“She really knows all of the offenses and defenses of other teams and does an excellent job when opponents apply full court pressure,” Cook said.
Plummer says she is currently undecided about her future ambitions but said she will go wherever basketball takes her; whether it is coaching or playing at a higher level, she is up for anything the future may hold.
