Unlike the beer-guzzling coeds so often portrayed in the media and movies, Nicholls students are doing more with their free time than just hitting the bars. Students spend time with their families, hang out–online and off, go to the movies and work. Jeanne Bass, general studies senior from Baton Rouge, spends a lot of her free time going home to be with family. She eats a lot of big, home-cooked meals and watches movies when she is with her family, Bass said. She said she also enjoys riding four-wheelers because it is a lot of fun.
Studying is another time filler for busy students.
“I have no time for hobbies,” Heidi Toloudis, English junior from Thibodaux, said. “All I do is read.”
Other students look further than school for positive activities.
Cedric Dark, biology freshman from Houma, tries to travel whenever he has free time. Recently he has been to Tallahassee, Fla. and also to Lafayette.
“I enjoy meeting new people,” Dark said. Dark also enjoys going to the movies and trying new restaurants.
His younger brother, Derek Dark, an Ellender Memorial High School student who is also enrolled at Nicholls, spends most of his free time playing a variety of sports and working out.
Many students spend their time working to help pay for school and living expenses.
James Burrell, nursing sophomore from Franklin, said most of his free time is spent studying and working. He also tries to go to the movies whenever his demanding schedule allows.
Myspace.com is where some students like to hang out in cyber space. Students can spend hours updating their pages, chatting with friends and making new friends.
Ben Ngetich, chemistry sophomore from Kenya, said myspace.com is an excellent way to stay in touch with people and a good way to spend time.
Ngetich said he also enjoys hanging out with friends in Bollinger Memorial Student Union or going to the movies.
Chrystal Davis, sociology junior from Sibley, likes going to the movies and hanging out with friends. Davis said she is involved in church and reads her Bible almost everyday.
