Many people will have their eyes and ears fixed on television sets this weekend as the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Seattle Seahawks battle in Super Bowl XL.While all watching will be tuned in to the same action, what they consume during the big game might differ.
Hebba Algazzar, marketing senior from Kenner, said she usually has a gathering with friends. She said she spends the day at no particular place but that a big-screen TV, snacks and an alcoholic beverage are things that are needed for her party. This year she will watch the Super Bowl at her apartment with friends.
Greg Brumfield Jr., graduate student from New Orleans, said the Super Bowl is “like the day before Christmas.”
“I watch the pre-game all day,” Brumfield said. “I watch Fox News mostly. For the past couple of years, I’ve been watching it here at Nicholls. Being around the people and the atmosphere, it’s been a real great experience. I look forward to the Super Bowl this year.”
Lauren Myers, mass communication junior from St. Amant, said she normally spends the Super Bowl with friends or at home. She said her experience this year could be different.
“This year I might have to work, so I’ll be very upset,” Myers said. “So I’ll watch the Super Bowl on a little TV.”
Cyril Djoukeng, a senior point guard on the Nicholls basketball team, said he will most likely spend the Super Bowl with others eating food and watching the game.
While all will be watching the game, some have different plans in terms of the food they will serve.
“My mom is a huge sports fan, too, so we always make all kinds of food before the game starts,” Myers said. The typical food that Myers has includes salsa, seven-layer taco dip, brownies, cookies and a fruit tray.
Algazzar said she would have sandwiches, chips, peanuts and “any type of junk food.”
Brumfield has not made food for the Super Bowl since his high school days but said he drinks Dr. Pepper and Pepsi and eats pizza during the game.
Along with food, there are also the moments during the game that some enjoy more than others.
Algazzar and Myers said they both like the game.
“The whole game,” Algazzar said. “From kickoff to whoever wins. I love it.”
Brumfield said he likes the game, but the commercials are his favorite. Djoukeng said he likes the halftime show.
“You never know what’s going to happen,” Djoukeng said alluding to Janet Jackson’s “wardrobe malfunction” during Super Bowl XXXVIII in 2004.
Although their locations for the game might differ, their favorite teams were all consistent.
“Ever since I started watching the NFL, Pittsburgh’s been my favorite team.” Brumfield said.
Nicholls students are not the only ones making plans for the Super Bowl. Calecas, Millet-Zeringue and Babington halls will be having events.
According to Jason Aguilar, business administration senior from New Orleans and hall director of Calecas, three 27-inch TVs will be placed in the lobby for the game. Drinks, snacks, food and prizes will also be available.
Millet-Zeringue Hall director Earl Collins, graphic design senior from Kenner, said his hall will have food and drinks too.
According to Jana Hubbell, Babington Hall director and area coordinator for residence life, her hall will also have a party beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the lobby with refreshments. She said all residence hall students can attend.
Activities for the Super Bowl are not limited to the University’s campus. Norm’s Daiquiris & Grill and Bellini’s will also have specials.
Cecelia Aucoin, manager of Norm’s, said “Super Bowl Special Fried Chicken Wings” would be available along with five bucket domestic beers for $7.
Bellini’s will have specials of buckets of beer along with Miller High Life available for a $1.50 each. According to manager Byron Blakeman, any person with a valid Nicholls ID can get one free call liquor or beer upon entering.
